January 2011: Empathy - The Antidote to Bullying
by Paul Mitchell Schools on 1/31/2011Index

Dear Future Professionals and Industry Friends,
I'm sure you've seen the recent flood of news and celebrity messages regarding suicide, which can stem from bullying. Suicide touched my family when my brother took his own life in 1998. In 2003, the Paul Mitchell Schools started the Andrew Gomez Dream Foundation to address the issues of bipolar disorder and depression. It was founded to honor Andrew, a Paul Mitchell graduate who launched a brilliant career and then took his own life four years later.
You don't have to be an adolescent to suffer from bullying or from feeling as though you don't fit in. Most of us have spent a lifetime trying to pull down barriers and break stereotypes. Our Paul Mitchell Schools have been vocal with our "One Size Fits All" message, which was designed to educate ourselves about those who deal with substance abuse, eating disorders, domestic violence, self-abuse, depression, suicide, gender identity, sexual identity, and more. Although our personal beliefs and lifestyles might favor a specific religion or political affiliation, we all have a responsibility to take off that "hat" and instead put on a different one: One Size Fits All. Like all people, we're human beings trying to do the right thing for humanity.
I loved Dave Navarro's brave and poignant message to those who consider suicide: "Now the world has one less mind that is open and different and unique and sensitive. Instead, we inherit the bullies, the fear, the set back... Our world has one less soul to help it evolve with a new level of clarity."
I also loved the wonderful YouTube message from Ellen DeGeneres.
As leaders, human beings, and ordinary people, our role is to remove our bias and judgments and replace them with empathy. Please join me in spreading the message that intolerance must end and acceptance must prevail.
— Winn Claybaugh
Dean and Cofounder, Paul Mitchell Schools
An Important Message from Paul Mitchell Schools

David Wagner is a world-renowned hairstylist, artist, entrepreneur, educator, author, “Daymaker,” and long-time Paul Mitchell Schools mentor. No stranger to the beauty industry, he is the owner of JUUT Salonspa, with nine locations that are continually voted “Best Salon” in their communities. He is also the author of Life as a Daymaker: How to Change the World by Simply Making Someone’s Day.
In 1986, standing onstage as a platform artist, David stopped doing hair and asked his audience, “What if we brought the intention of making our clients’ day to work? Imagine how much more fun we’d have!” The next day, he changed the title on his business cards from “Stylist” to “Daymaker.” About six months later, a frequent client stopped by between appointments, saying she just wanted to look good and feel good. “I gave her a great massage and shampoo, and we had a blast for about half an hour,” David says. Two days later, he got a card from the client saying, “Thank you for being there without knowing that you were.” David learned that she wanted to look good that night because she was planning to commit suicide: she wanted to look good for her own funeral but changed her mind because they had such a good time. David thought, “What if I wasn’t there?” and he started treating every client as if they were “the one.”

Paul Mitchell Crowns America’s
“Next Top Photo Stylists”
Three talented Paul Mitchell Future Professionals were named “Next Top Photo Stylist” by Paul Mitchell Editorial Director Lucie Doughty and a panel of distinguished judges.
Elizabeth Ankenman from Paul Mitchell The School — St. George, Erik McEwen from Paul Mitchell The School — Sherman Oaks, and Heather Burnworth of Paul Mitchell The School — Salt Lake City were named winners in the recent competition, which drew over 130 entries. The three winners traveled to Los Angeles in January for a two-day photo shoot with Lucie, where each winner had the opportunity to shoot one model with three separate style looks.
To win the title, all of the hopeful contestants set up their own photo shoots, which included selecting models and designing and executing the wardrobe, hair, and makeup. Each contestant submitted photos for five out of seven categories, including texture, avante garde, contemporary classic, color, cutting, male, and long hair upstyle.
“The entries were such a high standard,” Lucie said, “I was just amazed by the creativity and technical ability. The quality of the styling and their ability to do color and translate trends and techniques were really fantastic. It was tough picking the winners because so many were good. They all should be really proud of what they submitted.”
Lucie, who has put together countless winning photo shoots for the North American Hairstyling Awards (NAHA) and other competitions said, “Competing gets you thinking about your craft, how you can perfect your work and put your inspirations and ideas together as a story. Whether you’re doing a fashion show or photo shoot, or putting together a portfolio, it’s a demonstration of your work and creativity. There’s a lot of value in entering a contest like this one, and it’s something that all future and salon professionals should do on an ongoing basis. It keeps you inspired and pushing for the next level.”
The winners were notified by phone during the Paul Mitchell School Owners/Directors Summit.

Free Hugs Day 2010
An army of more than 12,000 Future Professionals took to the streets in September for Paul Mitchell Schools’ second nationwide Free Hugs Day. Dressed in their signature black outfits, carrying handmade Free Hugs signs, and naturally sporting fabulous styles, Future Professionals from the network’s 100 schools headed for plazas, parks, and other popular spots to offer hugs and make people’s day. Events for day and night school students occurred simultaneously in every time zone throughout the continental U.S. and Hawaii.
Paul Mitchell artists, educators, top executives, and superstars joined the Future Professionals at Free Hugs locations in their areas. In Los Angeles, members of the Back Street Boys — AJ McLean (pictured), Nick Carter, Brian Littrell, and Howie Dorough — joined Future Professionals and educators from Paul Mitchell The School — Sherman Oaks to spread the love.
“Some people weren’t really sure at first, but when they saw everyone else getting hugged they had to join in. Our Future Professionals said we should do Free Hugs every week!”
— Paul Mitchell The School — Boise
“It rained so hard that day, but the Future Professionals did not care. The local grocery store invited us in and we went around giving hugs. Some people got their groceries bagged, too!”
— Paul Mitchell The School — Escanaba
“We did our Free Hugs at the Veterans Hospital. One woman had just lost her husband that day. There were a dozen Future Professionals around her, hugging her and crying with her. It was so moving.”

5 Schools Celebrate November Openings
Once again, John Paul Mitchell Systems Chairman John Paul DeJoria and Paul Mitchell Schools Dean Winn Claybaugh jetted across the country to lead spectacular celebrations at five Paul Mitchell Schools.
On November 1, Vanguard College of Cosmetology — A Paul Mitchell Partner School proudly opened its third Louisiana campus. The former Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse headquarters, a landmark in the Fat City neighborhood of New Orleans, received substantial damage from hurricane Katrina and remained vacant until its acquisition as the new Paul Mitchell School. “We are thrilled to be part of the economic development and revitalization effort of the community,” John Paul said. Vanguard College CEO Lisa Palermo added, “The combined efforts of the new Fat City campus, along with the existing Slidell and Baton Rouge campuses, will help meet the ever-growing labor needs by placing hundreds of highly skilled, highly motivated professional hairdressers in the community annually.” The 25,000-square-foot facility integrates solar power, hot water recirculation systems, and other green initiatives.
On November 2, Paul Mitchell The School — Rhode Island welcomed guests to a noontime anniversary celebration. Director Veronica Rendina and Sales/Operations Leader John Amaral hosted the event, which featured a motivational class led by Winn Claybaugh. Later that day, Paul Mitchell The School — Tysons Corner marked its five-year anniversary with a celebrity-studded grand reopening. John Paul and Winn joined school owners Gary, Dennis, and Warren Ratner in welcoming over 400 guests and members of the Chamber of Commerce for the ribbon cutting ceremony at the 11,000-square-foot school.
November 3 saw the duo landing in North Carolina for the grand opening of Paul Mitchell The School — Charlotte. Owner/Directors Steve and Lisa Pollak welcomed Future Professionals, family members, and community leaders including Mayor Anthony Foxx.
After outgrowing its original location, Paul Mitchell The School — Costa Mesa celebrated its grand reopening on November 14. Originally opened 10 years ago, it was the first school in the nationwide network. John Paul and Winn were joined by an enthusiastic crowd of Paul Mitchell school owners, educators, and artistic directors, including Angus Mitchell, Robert Cromeans, Scott Cole, Linda Yodice, Stephanie Kocielski, and Costa Mesa Mayor Pro Tem Wendy Leece, who all shared inspiring messages with the thousand-plus audience at the ribbon cutting ceremony. As part of its “greenification,” the school installed the innovative Graywater Recycling System, which captures used water from the school’s Wash House shampoo facilities and purifies, disinfects, and stores it for irrigation, toilet tanks, and other recycled water uses.

Cancer Awareness Events
During October, Paul Mitchell Schools held a variety of activities to support breast cancer causes. Here are just a few:
At Paul Mitchell The School — Indianapolis, it was “Blow Out Cancer” month, with 10% of all tool purchases and $8 from every service performed on Saturdays donated to the American Cancer Society. For the second straight year, the Design Team did hair and makeup for a fashion show at the Marriott; Nordstrom’s provided the wardrobe, and the models and 500 attendees were breast cancer survivors.
Illinois-based Trend Setters — A Paul Mitchell Partner School offered their guests “pink streaks” for the month of October, with all proceeds going to charity. One group of women came in to get pink streaks in support of a friend and coworker recently diagnosed with breast cancer.
Imagine — A Paul Mitchell Partner School in Norman, Oklahoma, raised $500 at their Pink Carpet Event for Susan G. Komen for the Cure.
Paul Mitchell The School in Overland Park, Kansas, helped out with the Pink Heals Tour, shaving the heads of two firemen and one very brave woman who was honoring a friend battling breast cancer.
Ann Bowler Day
After his 92-year-old friend Ann Bowler passed away in December, Paul Mitchell Schools Dean and Cofounder Winn Claybaugh called on the nationwide network of Future Professionals and school staff members to visit local nursing homes, retirement homes, and assisted living centers and create some magic by bringing gifts (if appropriate), singing carols, and reaching out to these adorable individuals. Winn also reminded everyone to sincerely thank the nurses, doctors, and caregivers who look after these beautiful people.
“I realize that this time of year is very busy for all of you,” Winn said. “Actually, I can’t think of a better time of year because many elderly people feel especially alone during the holidays. Mostly you’ll be there providing love, a hug, and companionship. Every time I asked Ann if there was anything I could do for her, her only response was, ‘Just be my friend.’”
An overwhelming number of schools answered Winn’s call.
Paul Mitchell The School — Tampa’s Be Nice (Or Else!) Team provided a day of pampering, including hair and makeup for about 50 special individuals. “We brought them so much joy that they want us to come monthly,” said school director Kevin Michaels. “We plan on making plenty more visits like this one.”
At Ulupono Academy — A Paul Mitchell Partner School in Honolulu, Hawaii, Learning Leader Advisor Carly Sai read Winn’s request to her Theory Class and then had everyone take out their cell phones to call their grandparents, tell them they loved them, and wish them holiday greetings. Tesha, a Future Professional from Atlanta, couldn’t get through to her grandmother and made a mental note to try again after school, which she did. The next day, Tesha came in with some sad news: her grandmother had passed away. “She expressed how grateful she was that we had them call their grandparents yesterday because it was her chance to speak to her grandmother one more time,” Carly said.
The Be Nice (Or Else!) Team from Imagine — A Paul Mitchell Partner School in Little Rock, Arkansas, did “Mani’s and Makeovers” for 25 seniors at Camp Aldersgate’s weekly Seniors Day Out. “We had such an amazing time, the seniors and staff eagerly invited us back for Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day,” said Admissions Coordinator Meghan Sullivan. “We were there to make the seniors feel pampered but, really, we were the ones who felt refreshed and so full of joy.”
Winn reports that the Paul Mitchell Schools will make Ann Bowler Day an annual event. “It’s no accident that Ann passed away in December,” he said. “It’s a time when the elderly need us to reach out, but our schools reported that they benefited just as much, if not more, from the event.”
See more photos from Ann Bowler Day.
John Paul Pet Events
Paul Mitchell The School — Costa Mesa held a pet day and adoption fair benefiting the Orange County Pit Bull Rescue on Sunday, October 10, 2010. Activities included a pet wash, vendors, children’s activities, a barbeque, raffles, John Paul Pet products, a pet supplies donation drive, and pet adoptions. The event raised $577, and three pit bulls are pending approval to be adopted into their new forever homes. “This was, by far, the largest and most successful pet event ever held at Paul Mitchell The School — Costa Mesa,” said John Paul Pet Director Shawn Claybaugh.
The Cao Institute of Aesthetics — A Paul Mitchell Partner School took part in a John Paul Pet event with singing sensation Pink and Dog Whisperer TV show host Cesar Millan, seen frequently on the Oprah Winfrey show.
The January/February 2011 Best Friends Magazine includes a full-page article about the volunteer visit and efforts of John Paul Pet and Paul Mitchell schools at the Best Friends Animal Sanctuary last August/September. "This is yet an other step in spreading the message about how our companies work together to promote the benefits of proper care for pets while increasing awareness of animal-related issues,” said John Paul Pet Director Shawn Claybaugh. Best Friends Magazine is the nation’s largest general-interest animal magazine with a circulation of over 200,000. This all-good news publication is an expression of the Best Friends philosophy that kindness to all living things builds a better world for all of us, and it helps share information about No More Homeless Pets efforts around the world.
Costa Mesa Be Nice Team Takes
Beauty to the Streets
Inspired by the work of Cyndi DeSoto, author of Changing the Way the World Thinks About Beauty, Paul Mitchell The School — Costa Mesa’s Be Nice (Or Else!) Team took to the streets to test out Cyndi’s belief that, if beauty is more than skin deep, then the role of the beauty professional could be more than just helping someone look good.
“Everyone kept asking me, ‘What can a little banner do?’ and ‘Why are you doing this?” said organizer and Be Nice (Or Else!) team member Cicily Rae. “We went outside at 10 AM, thinking we’d be there for about 20 minutes. Within seconds, cars started honking and people were giving peace signs. Some looked at us with huge smiles, and others took pictures or videotaped us. One guy took a picture of us with the banner and sent it with the message ‘You’re beautiful’ to everyone in his phone. We were all sweating in the hot sun, but we were so blown away that we wanted to stay longer and longer. We finally ended at about 3:00. Everyone who doubted our simple little banner became a complete believer in what a little thing can do for a person or a community.”
Watch for Cyndi DeSoto’s upcoming MASTERS interview in March 2011. Visit www.mastersaudioclub.com for details. Now available in CDs and MP3!
The Gift of Your Presence
By Dale Jones
Owner, Paul Mitchell The School — Nashville
My five-year-old daughter had a father-daughter dance coming up at her school. I was in Japan but decided to come home and surprise my little girl. I barely made it, arriving just in time to go straight to the dance. I could see my daughter standing with her friends, looking sad and forlorn. Then her friends said, “Your daddy is here!” She turned to see me, burst into tears, and ran to lay her head on my shoulder. I had a doll with me, a present for my little girl, but she didn’t even notice. She was just so happy to see … me! Until that moment, I never realized how important the gift of your presence can be. Toys and trinkets can’t replace you. Nothing beats showing up as your authentic self.
On another occasion, I thought I might have to miss my son’s seventh birthday. I was going to call him on the phone before he blew out his candles, but I rearranged my schedule and came home to surprise him. I snuck into the house and hid in the basement, then called him on the phone just as he was about to blow out his candles.
“What did you wish for?” I asked.
“I can’t tell you,” he said, “or it won’t come true.”
“Yes you can,” I said.
Quietly he said, “I wish you were here.”
I walked up the stairs, still talking on the phone, and said, “Turn around.” I can’t even describe his reaction, or my joy at seeing it. Although he had asked for some toys for his birthday, when it was time to blow out those candles, he wished his daddy could be home.
In the beauty industry, being successful is not always about giving the best haircut, facial, or manicure. The majority of your success depends upon your attitudes and behavior as a visionary. Visionaries show up: they show up at every school function, FUNraising activity, and celebration. They also show up when one other person might need nothing more than the gift of their presence. If you think you’re not important or you don’t have much to offer, think again. More than anything else in the world, you can give the gift of your presence. There is no greater gift.
Brian Green, Class of 2011
Paul Mitchell The School — Gastonia
Nicknamed “Big Baby” for being the youngest and biggest (he’s well over 6 feet tall) of his coworkers at the Philip Morris plant, 31-year-old Brian Green could easily use his size to intimidate or bully, but he chooses to do the exact opposite.
Not long ago, Brian was laid off from Philip Morris and offered a paid tuition at any accredited school as part of his severance package. His interests lie in cooking and doing hair, and with many of his friends and family telling him about Paul Mitchell Schools, he decided to give it a try.
Brian says enrolling in Paul Mitchell The School — Gastonia has been the beginning of a new path. “It’s freedom, it’s a way of life,” he says. “When you go to Paul Mitchell, it’s the life lessons you learn.” Even with a wife and three children, Brian has no trouble relating to his younger, fellow Future Professionals, offering advice and proudly breaking barriers by not looking like your typical hairstylist.
Brian says the most important things he’s learned so far are “fake it till you make it” and give a great Wash House experience. “If you can get a good Wash House experience, you pretty much have them,” he says about the importance of making a great first impression on your clients.
After graduating in January 2011, Brian plans to work in a Paul Mitchell Focus Salon and build his clientele. From there, he wants to own his own Focus Salon and eventually open a Paul Mitchell School. His ambition certainly sets him apart from the crowd. As he tells anyone he meets, “My name’s Big Baby and I’m kind of like a big deal.”
Brian’s Advice for Future Professionals:
- Come with an open mind and soak up all the information you can.
- Always say yes. You never know what doors might open and what a difference you might make in somebody’s life just by saying yes.
- Always stay around positive people.
“Brian has a charisma about him that makes him a natural-born leader. He never thinks twice about saying yes to everything. His great personality and his visionary attitude are exactly what it takes to succeed in our industry.”
— Steve Pollak
Owner, Paul Mitchell The School — Gastonia
Nicoletta Gauci, Class of 2008
Paul Mitchell The School — Sherman Oaks
Three years ago, Future Professional Nicoletta Gauci outlined some of her dreams and goals. The list was long: she wanted to work in the entertainment industry, do print work, work for designers, work in a salon, become a Learning Leader at a Paul Mitchell School, travel and work in Europe, build a name for herself, and open her own Focus Salon. Who would have imagined she’d do nearly all those things in three short years!
After studying at the Academy of Art University and Paul Mitchell The School — Sherman Oaks, Nicoletta’s first big opportunity was assisting Paul Mitchell Editorial Director Lucie Doughty on a NAHA photo shoot. Since then, she has styled hair for numerous editorial and beauty shoots, celebrity personalities, and marketing campaigns; done art direction for magazine submissions; and helped educate future and current hairstylists. Nicoletta has a flourishing clientele at Rouge Studio in California and an eclectic blog covering beauty, fashion, art, and daily life as a hairstylist in the industry (www.nicolettagauci.com).
“I have grown as a person and a stylist and stayed with my Paul Mitchell family as I had hoped back then,” Nicoletta says. “I’ve worked in the same Focus Salon since I graduated, been on corporate and client shoots with Lucie, built my own editorial and commercial book, and worked as a Learning Leader at the same school where I began my training.”
On March 1, Nicoletta embarks on her next great adventure when she joins John Paul Mitchell Systems Italia to work as an educator throughout Italy and a colorist and stylist in Italy’s first Focus Salon. Her current dream is to leave her mark on the beauty industry with a smile on her face and a brush in her hand, and you can bet she’ll succeed!
Nicoletta’s Advice for Future Professionals:
- Be not only a hairstylist for people to look up to but a person to admire.
- Never stop asking how and why.
- Never settle for anything less than the best.
- With a smile on your face and a vision of manifesting your future, life becomes a much better place.

Floyd’s 99 Barbershops
With 46 locations nationwide, Floyd’s 99 Barbershops are music-filled places where both men and women experience superior service, a great atmosphere, and convenience at an affordable price. Floyd’s 99’s approach is to keep services simple, focusing on traditional haircuts, styling, and color services for men and women and men’s specialty barbering (face and head shaves). Haircuts range between $15 and $34 (local pricing may vary) and all services are guaranteed.
The first Floyd’s 99 shop opened in Denver, Colorado, in 2001. The company is headquartered in Greenwood Village, Colorado. About half of the shops are corporate owned and operated; the rest are franchises.
Hiring Process:
- Hold a state-issued cosmetology or barber license with 1 year experience in cutting hair (although Floyd’s will interview and sometimes hire students right out of school if they meet most of the guidelines listed below).
- Apply on line at www.floydsbarbershop.com or send résumé to givemeajob@floydsbarberhop.com. You can list your shops/city of interest in your application.
- Pass a series of 2—3 interviews.
First, Floyd’s looks for experience, GREAT customer service skills, work history trends, and punctuality. Then they look for personal representation including communication skills, image, personality, energy level, passion for the industry and customers, and a smile. In the technical interview, applicants must demonstrate excellent technical ability, especially with men’s cuts and multiple tools used. Clipper proficiency is a must.
Floyd’s also looks for rock stars who want to work for the business and customer flow. This means stylists/barbers with flexible availability to work. Too many restrictions or an expectation to work 9—5, Monday—Friday won’t work too well in this industry. They love when an applicant comes to an interview prepared with questions to ask.

Many Paul Mitchell Schools made videos on Free Hugs Day 2010. This one from Paul Mitchell The School — Salt Lake City was especially fun because Future Professionals were noticed giving free hugs outside the local news station and ended up on the news that day.

If You Really Knew Me (MTV)
http://www.mtv.com/shows/if_you_really_knew_me/series.jhtml
Like a reality version of The Breakfast Club, each episode of If You Really Knew Me takes place at a different high school and follows five students from different cliques as they go through the life-changing experience of Challenge Day, a one-day program that breaks down walls and changes views. Watch the amazing transformation each week as new students open up and reveal who they really are. Is it possible to change your life, and maybe even your high school, in one day?
“I watched If You Really Knew Me and cried like a baby; all tears of joy, love, and hope.” Winn Claybaugh says. “I celebrate that there are MTV executives, producers, consultants, and directors who are using their talent and influence to heal this planet by spreading a strong message of love and hope. I beg you to find If You Really Knew Me in your TV guide, record every episode, and spread the word.”

Paul Mitchell Green Team Newsletter
Paul Mitchell Green Team Newsletter
At home, at school, or in the salon, try these 10 tips for a greener way of life!
- Use biodegradable trash bags. Order online at www.buygreen.com
- Collect the running water while you’re waiting for it to get hot and use it for other things like watering plants.
- Keep your car tires properly inflated—it will improve your gas mileage by up to 3 percent! Every gallon of gas you save reduces your CO2 emissions by 20 pounds. (www.care2.com)
- Trade unwanted clothes, accessories, cosmetics, and shoes at www.swapstyle.com. Swapping minimizes the amount of harmful emissions created by the manufacturing process. Plus, trading is free (you’ll only pay for shipping).
- Do laundry in cold water to significantly decrease the amount of energy you use and CO2 you produce. You’ll save money, too!
- Getting catalogs you don’t need? Reduce your carbon footprint by removing your name from mailing lists at www.catalogchoice.org.
- Close the shades or blinds at night to reduce the amount of heat lost through the windows.
- Pay bills online and switch to online banking. You’ll save paper and energy, plus it’s super convenient!
- Cordless phones sit in a recharging cradle and suck up power 24/7. Minimize your energy consumption by switching to phones with cords.
- Avoid overnight shipping when you order something online. Choosing ground transportation instead of rush delivery cuts down the use of fossil fuel and pollution. (www.thedailygreen.com)
